An Interview with the Founder of the Dream & Draw Project

Inspiring Children to Dream Big and Express Their Stories Through Creativity

By Ava Griffith, contributing writer for Macaroni KID Cecil - NE Harford January 23, 2026

Hi, my name is Ava. I’m 9 years old, and I created the Dream & Draw Project as my CSI (community service initiative). Last year, I came up with an idea and presented it to the Belle of the Ball pageants. I ended up winning the title of Miss Maryland Ambassador! The Ambassador Title is awarded to one contestant per state who exemplifies leadership, passion, and dedication to her chosen cause. Once I won, I wanted to start planning events and other activities for my CSI.

Backstory About the Art Project (What Inspired You?)

I’ve always wanted to be an artist and own my own art gallery, giving artists the chance to have their art seen. So when I started thinking about my CSI, I figured it would be cool to do that for kids with the Little Lights Self-Portrait Exhibit.

The Little Lights Self-Portrait Exhibit is a community art showcase celebrating the creativity, identity, and bright futures of our youngest artists. Students, ages 6-10, are invited to create expressive self-portraits based on the theme “What Makes Me ME!”, using colors, symbols, and imagery that reflect their interests, families, cultures, and personal identities.

Do you have any future projects in mind?

I’m pretty busy with school, sports, and stuff, but I’d love to do art classes for kids in my community. There aren't always things for kids to do, and I think planning that would be fun. And a great experience!

How has art influenced your life? How might it be helpful for others?

I believe art can help kids express their passion in ways they can and can’t imagine. Art has influenced and helped me in many ways! It’s a creative outlet that can allow you to make friends while being creative. I also found confidence in myself. Of course I do pageants and sports but art gives you a different kind of confidence.
