Tips for Going Out to Eat with Kids

I surveyed local parents who shared their best tips for going out to eat with young children to make the experience more enjoyable. Keep these in mind the next time you go out!

Ordering

  • Look up the menu in advance for quick ordering. Place the kids’ food orders with drink orders so it arrives sooner.
  • Arrive early to the restaurant (around 5 pm) to avoid a busy/loud dining area and/or long waits for a table and food preparation. If your child(ren) are more sensitive to noise, ask to sit in a corner if available.

Children Under 3

  • For young children who need a high chair, consider bringing a seat cover to prevent excess mess on the highchair (sometimes high chairs are not very clean to begin with!)
  • Bring a ziplock bag with a bib, suction plate/tray, and/or kids’ utensils if your child is new to eating at the table.
  • Bring sticky reusable or disposable placemats for young children without a plate. This prevents foods from touching the table directly, and keeps the mat from sliding around.

Entertainment

  • Play ‘quiet’ table games including:
    • I Spy
    • Rock, Paper, Scissors
    • Tic-Tac-Toe
    • What’s Missing (take an object off the table and guess)
  • Bring small, easy travel games such as:
    • Rope Tangle
    • Maze Fidget Toys
    • Magnetic Memory Game
    • Spot It
    • Piggy Piggy
    • Peg Solitaire (the game from Cracker Barrel)
  • Keep a bag handy in your car with a notebook/coloring book, coloring materials, toys, fidgets, and books. Be mindful of the car temperature! Crayons can melt and markers can dry out in hot conditions. Include markers in your bag once your child is old enough not to draw on the restaurant table (unless it is covered with paper!) Fun, non-messy creative alternatives for younger children include Water WOW! and Crayola Color Wonder.
